About
Welcome to the Teaching Tracker Tools website. Here you will find the Teacher Tracker Tool (T3), Google Forms student feedback survey and the Collaborative Approach to Teaching Observations (CATO) post-observation discussion questions. These tools are designed to capture a range of elements of classroom teaching and learning.
Over five years, we have refined processes for observing lessons and developed a core tool, the T3, to capture these observations. Trials of the tool have been conducted with teachers and their student teachers towards identifying enhancing the impacts and the useability of these tools.
This project has developed a dynamic set of tools for collecting observations of teaching and learning in the classroom, building on platform of research for classroom observations and feedback. We invite you to use these tools for purposes of enhancing teacher professional learning, both for pre-service and in-service teaching.
Responding to Covid-19 school closures during 2020, we have developed a new tool: the remote peer observation checklist tool which can be used to provide feedback after watching a lesson remotely.
This site is a product of a research project funded by the Department of Education and Training Victoria (Teaching Academies of Professional Practice) which will continue to be developed.

About the Teaching tracker tools
Teacher Tracker Tool (T3)
The Teacher Tracker Tool (T3) is a digital way of capturing non-judgmental evidenced-based feedback of a teacher teaching a class. The Teacher Candidate/Teacher can look at the data sets and patterns, then chat with their colleague/observer about where and what to do next. There is a Primary and Secondary Teacher Tracker Tool as well as additional classroom layouts which can be downloaded separately.
The Teacher Tracker Tool has 5 parts (not all parts need to be completed for one lesson).
1. Make, say, do, write
2. Checklist of observed behaviours
3. Verbal Flow
4. Proximity chart
5. Post lesson discussion questions
Google Forms student feedback survey
An effective way for teachers to gather information about students’ experience of a lesson, or teaching episode, is to get them to reflect on the learning that has occurred. ‘Exit Slips’ have been a popular way to collect this information, however we suggest that this can also be achieved using digital technologies. We have therefore created a simple ‘Google Form’ that would help teachers to gather student reflections and give an immediate snapshot of the teaching episode.
We have designed three versions of the form so that Early years, Primary and Secondary students can participate in the feedback process. The questions we have used ask the students to reflect on the effectiveness of instructional strategies, teacher interaction and their own learning. The forms can be completed in 2-3 minutes, on any device and will give the teacher immediate feedback from a whole class, or several members of the class.
These forms are designed to gain formative information; they are specifically focused on collecting data from a single teaching episode that will help the teacher develop their pedagogic practice.
Collaborative Approach to Teaching Observations (CATO)
CATO is an extension of one person observation approach where there is more than one observer. It builds on the use of the T3 observation tool, and may use Google Forms student feedback surveys for the same lesson episode.
The CATO process is followed by a round table discussion.
This approach is process oriented to focus on three (or four) way conversations.
In the post-lesson round table discussion, turn-taking is essential so that everyone has opportunity to contribute.
CATO –in class protocol
1. Have an agreed focus (TO ENABLE DEEPER DISCUSSION)
2. Be silent during whole class instruction (TO DEEPLY WATCH)
3. Make detailed notes including transcript fragments (TO GATHER EVIDENCE) -
4. Record examples of evidence of learning (TO FOCUS ON LEARNING)
5. Stay for the whole lesson (TO SUSPEND JUDGEMENT)
6. Circulate when student-centred activities occur (TO LOOK AT LEARNING PRODUCTS)
7. Ask students questions about the lesson, with permission of host teacher (TO PROBE LEARNING)
